One World, One Beat
About
700 members of Girlguiding Dundee marked Girlguiding UK’s
Centenary World Thinking Day with a high energy celebration at
the Whitehall Theatre.
The Rainbows, Brownies, Guides,
Senior Section, Leaders and Trefoil Guild gathered to mark one
of the most significant dates in the Guiding calendar. World
Thinking Day is an opportunity for the ten million Guides and
Girl Scouts in 145 countries around the world to think about the
diversity of the worldwide membership and show appreciation for
each other’s lives. Across the UK many ‘One World One Beat’
performing arts festivals were staged over the weekend as
special events for this centenary year.
At the Whitehall on Sunday 21st
February 2010, girls from different areas
of the city performed songs and dances to represent different
countries. The acts included lively dances from Brazil, New
Zealand and South Africa, songs from Australia and
Switzerland, colourful Bollywood and line dancing, and a
graceful fan dance from Japan. The audience had come prepared
with homemade flags, Maori sticks, castanets and maracas so that
the whole theatre could join in with many of the acts. The acts
were interspersed with campfire songs led by Alison Niven, the
County Arts Advisor.
The celebration drew to a close
with some ‘Thinking Day Thoughts’ from Sandra Ogilvie, County
President, and renewal of the Guiding Promise by all the girls
and adults, led by Ann Gordon, County Commissioner.
