Centenary Outdoor
Weekend at Douglaswood
Rainbows, Brownies,
Guides, Senior Section and adult volunteers from all across
Dundee came together for our Centenary Outdoor Weekend at
Douglaswood from 28th to 30th May. In total around 180 girls
from across the county attended.
Guides camped under canvas on Friday and Saturday nights and
were joined by the Brownies on Saturday morning - the Brownies
had a sleepover indoors on Saturday night. As the Brownies
departed on Sunday morning, the Rainbows arrived for a day of
activities.
The weather couldn't have been predicted for this time of year
and the campers were a bit cold on Friday night after putting up
our tents in the rain. However the girls weren't planning on
having much sleep anyway and had a brilliant time. The sun shone
all day on Saturday and the Brownies and Guides were able to
participate in all of the outdoor activities that had been
planned for them, including a climbing wall, simulation wounds
and injuries, gadgets, crafts and others. The day finished off
perfectly with a traditional campfire, enjoyed by all!
The tents were a bit warmer and the girls and leaders all got
more sleep on the Saturday night after having been tired out
throughout the day! On Sunday morning, unfortunately the weather
got the better of us and we had to resort to the wet weather
plan. Spirits remained high though and everyone still had a
fantastic time!
Well done to the Outdoor Team for organising what was certainly
a memorable Centenary camp!

Guides Take
Over the Carnival
Around 230 Guides
from across Dundee 'Took over the Carnival' at Horne's
Pleasure Fair at Caird Park on 11th May as part of the UK-wide
Girlguiding centenary celebrations.
From 5.00 to 6.00pm we had exclusive use of all the rides and
then were able to stay until 8.00pm while the carnival was
open to the public.
Some girls were more daring than others and embraced all of
the rides, some of which made the leaders feel sick just
watching! The others opted to stick to the more placid
activities like the fun slides and hall of mirrors. Whatever
the 'fear factor', all had a fantastic time and we didn't let
the dreadful weather put a dampener on our evening!!

One World, One Beat
About
700 members of Girlguiding Dundee marked Girlguiding UK’s
Centenary World Thinking Day with a high energy celebration at
the Whitehall Theatre.
The Rainbows, Brownies, Guides,
Senior Section, Leaders and Trefoil Guild gathered to mark one
of the most significant dates in the Guiding calendar. World
Thinking Day is an opportunity for the ten million Guides and
Girl Scouts in 145 countries around the world to think about the
diversity of the worldwide membership and show appreciation for
each other’s lives. Across the UK many ‘One World One Beat’
performing arts festivals were staged over the weekend as
special events for this centenary year.
At the Whitehall on Sunday 21st
February 2010, girls from different areas
of the city performed songs and dances to represent different
countries. The acts included lively dances from Brazil, New
Zealand and South Africa, songs from Australia and
Switzerland, colourful Bollywood and line dancing, and a
graceful fan dance from Japan. The audience had come prepared
with homemade flags, Maori sticks, castanets and maracas so that
the whole theatre could join in with many of the acts. The acts
were interspersed with campfire songs led by Alison Niven, the
County Arts Adviser.
The celebration drew to a close
with some ‘Thinking Day Thoughts’ from Sandra Ogilvie, County
President, and renewal of the Guiding Promise by all the girls
and adults, led by Ann Gordon, County Commissioner.
