The 1st Muirhead Rainbows completed their Communication Stage 1 skills builder badge recently. The session was led by Brownie leader Iona Cavill and her friend Katherine who talked to the Rainbows about deaf awareness.
The Rainbows learnt about the types of deafness, how people become deaf, famous celebrities who are deaf (the Rainbows even knew Gladiator Fury) and aids to help deaf individuals (Iona and Katherine showed them some hearing aids and cochlear implants).
Katherine and Iona even brought along a teddy bear with hearing aids and a Barbie doll with hearing aids. The Rainbows were taught some basic sign language including the alphabet, their names and a few words.
At the end of the night the Rainbows showed Iona and Katherine their sign language skills, where they signed along to a song in BSL. Finally, the newest Rainbows made their Rainbow Promise using BSL.
Thank you to Iona and Katherine for teaching the Rainbows the importance of deaf awareness and congratulations to the Rainbows for completing their Communication Stage 1 skills builder badge.
