Girlguiding Scotland Celebrates - Congratulations!

Congratulations to those nominated from Girlguiding Dundee to attend the first "Girlguiding Scotland Celebrates" event. The nine volunteers from the county have been nominated by their peers which makes it extra special.

Two of our members have been nominated as Change Makers - these are volunteers who have challenged or empowered people - for example growing a new unit or empowering girls to fulfil their potential.

Adrienne Smith, Broughty Ferry Rangers, started up the Ranger unit in Broughty Ferry two years ago, growing guiding for that section in the Ferry.

Anna Hannen Thomas, 2nd Monfieth Guides, is a new member of Girlguiding Dundee, but in her role as Cashback co-ordinator for GG Scotland she helps to challenge and empower units over Scotland .

Alison French, 1st Muirhead Guides, and Alison Collin, 73rd Rainbows and Guides, have both been nominated in the supporter category. This category highlights the volunteers who can be relied upon at every event to be there, be supportive and to be caring in their roles. Both Alisons excel at this and deserve to be recognised for the work they do, often quietly in the background, for their units and the county as a whole.

Our other nominees are nominated in the role model category, which celebrates volunteers who are inspiring or fun and provide exceptional girl-led experiences for young members and serve as role models to the young members.

Ali Niven, chair of the county adventure team and from 29th Brownies and Guides, is no stranger to most of you, going out of her way to provide amazing experiences at both a unit and county level for the young members. Her boundless enthusiasm and energy helps to ensure that all members, from the youngest rainbows to the oldest volunteer, have a fabulous time.

Dawn Short, 2nd Monifieth Guides, ensures that her girls always have a great time - whether that be making confectionery in a unit meeting or taking the girls to the new Aqua splash at Monikie Park. Her girls know how to have an adventure and Dawn ensures that she provides them with the experience and opportunity.

Jenny Waugh, Monifieth district commissioner and Brownie units, has recently returned to the county and has jumped right back in to local guiding. When the opportunity arose to take on a new challenge as a district commissioner, Jenny jumped at the challenge and inspires the girls in her units to jump at challenges too. By day she inspires people to learn excellent life skills on water and by night, on land!

Kate Southern, 29th Guides, has joined us from Kentucky and is an exceptionally inspiring role model to the girls in her unit and the county more widely. She is an active part of the Adventure team, even if she doesn’t see the point in camping, and has also used her transferable skills to be part of the newly formed county finance committee. Kate’s enthusiasm for Guiding is clear, especially when teaching a new song from the states.

Our last, but no means least, nominee is Rhoda Smith, 63rd Rainbows and Brownies. Rhoda has been inspiring, empowering, supporting and challenging girls in Broughty Ferry for over 40 years. Rhoda’s units demonstrate all that is important in Guiding. She gives her young members opportunities to help their community, learn about the world in which they live, have adventures and generally have fun. Her units are girl led and this is clear to see by the smiles on their faces.

Shona Candlish, 31st A Guides, who received her Queens Guide Award last year, has also been invited for a special afternoon tea.

Congratulations to all our nominees on their achievements and although not all of them were able to attend the event, I hope that they all feel proud of their achievements.
